A gorilla trekking permit in Uganda costs $700 per person for foreign non-residents. The total trip cost including accommodation, transport, guide, and the permit typically ranges from $1,500–$3,000 for a 3–4 day gorilla trekking experience in Bwindi Impenetrable Forest.
The best months for gorilla trekking in Uganda are June–September and December–February during the dry seasons. Trails are less muddy and more manageable. However, gorilla trekking is available year-round, and the green season offers lower permit availability competition.
Gorilla trekking is moderately to highly strenuous, involving 2–6 hours of hiking through dense, hilly rainforest at altitudes of 1,160–2,607 meters. Trails can be steep and muddy. A reasonable level of fitness is recommended, though porters are available to assist hikers.
Book gorilla trekking permits 3–6 months in advance, especially for peak season (June–September). Permits are limited to 8 visitors per gorilla family per day, and popular families sell out quickly. Last-minute permits are occasionally available but not guaranteed.
