Common Questions

Frequently Asked Questions

When is the best time to see the Great Migration?

The Great Migration is a year-round event across the Serengeti-Mara ecosystem. The famous Mara River crossings occur July–September in northern Serengeti and Kenya's Maasai Mara. The calving season (January–March) in southern Serengeti is equally spectacular with 8,000+ wildebeest born daily.

Where should I stay to see the Great Migration?

Location depends on timing: January–March stay in southern Serengeti (Ndutu area) for calving; April–June in central/western Serengeti for the herds moving north; July–September in northern Serengeti (Kogatende) or Maasai Mara for river crossings. Mobile camps that follow the herds offer the best experience.

How many days do I need for a migration safari?

Plan at least 4–5 days in the migration area for a good chance of witnessing crossings or large herd movements. A 7–10 day trip combining the migration with other parks (Ngorongoro, Tarangire) provides a more complete safari experience. Migration events are unpredictable, so more days increase your chances.
